Cabin Counselor-7 week Core Camp

Job Title: Cabin Counselor (7 week position)

Reports to: Assistant Director/Camp Life Division Director

Position Purpose:  The Cabin Counselor is the primary caregiver for students in their cabin and throughout the camp division.  The cabin counselor is responsible for the safety of students in their care, guides students in their personal growth during their session, and serves as a role model to students and staff in attitude, behavior, and actions. Cabin counselors are also responsible for explaining and establishing expectations for camper behavior and adhering to Interlochen Arts Camp policies for campers and staff.

Essential Job Functions:  Cabin counselors participate in the development and implementation of activities for campers within division and are expected to deliver one age-appropriate cabin night activity each week, and supervise campers on main camp, at performances and off campus. Cabin counselors will attend unit and divisional staff meetings and communicate with parents.  

Other Job Duties:  Due to the scope of programs and enrollment at Interlochen Arts Camp, cabin counselors have secondary job assignments which can be within their camp division or assisting other departments.  These assignments take between 6-8 hours each week and can fall within the following areas:
   Mailroom
   Printshop
   Attendance
   Food Service
   Office Duty within division
   Division recreation or crafts
   Lifeguard (additional stipend for this assignment and earlier arrival date)
Due to the daily contact time with campers and their developmental needs, counselors in the junior divisions do not have secondary job assignments.

Equipment Used: Computer, phone, fire extinguisher, PA system.

Qualifications:

  • Staff must be 18 years of age and/or have graduated from high school by June 12th, 2010.
  • Cabin counselors must have a desire to work with youth, a willingness to live in a cabin and work in a rustic camp environment, an understanding of the developmental needs of youth.
  • An ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive and respectful manner.
  • An ability to assist or lead recreation or waterfront activities is desires.
  • An ability to communicate effectively and work both independently and as part of a larger team is essential.
  • Staff interested in working in the high school divisions need to have completed one year in college or the equivalent.

Compensation:  $1,100/summer (includes room and board)

Interlochen offers a lifeguard training class that you can register for once hired.  It runs the week of June 14th and costs $95.  If you pass and have lifeguard duties you will be given an additional stipened of  $150 on to the $1100 Camp Counselor compensation.
