ARTS AND EVENTS CALENDAR FOR MONDAY, MAY 12, 2008
Area residents wanting to dispose of any unwanted eyeglasses may now deliver those lenses and frames to Northern Vision Eye Care of Traverse City who has been named a collection point by the Grand Traverse County’s Resource Recovery Division’s “Take It Back” program. All eyewear that is collected will be repaired and donated to a national organization whose mission is to provide eyeglasses to those in need. For further information call 932.9000.

Grand Traverse Heritage Center will embark on its second in a series of History in Motion chartered bus tour beginning on Saturday, May 31st. The tour will feature a boat tour of the Soo Locks and exploration of the Museum Ship Valley Camp, Tower of History, and River of History Museum in Sault Ste. Marie. The Grand Traverse County Parks and Recreation Department has teamed up with local music instructors to offer its first ever summer music camp at the Grand Traverse Civic Center. "Summer Band" is a youth orchestra that brings students together with artist mentors to have fun while staying active on their instruments over the summer. The repertoire features rock 'n' roll and other popular music arranged for strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, guitars and vocals. Registration costs only $25 and is open to all ages. The five week session runs Wednesday and Friday mornings 10 AM to Noon, from July 16 through August 15. The program is made possible by a grant from the Dennos Museum Center and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. Continuing Programs
The public is invited to enjoy a “Chance to Dance” Fridays from 10pm to midnight beginning Friday, May 9th and running through June 20th (except May 23rd) at Northwestern Michigan College in the Physical Education building. Beginners and experienced dancers are invited to join others to try a mix of styles including waltz, blues, swing/jitterbug, slow dance, tango, cha-cha, salsa and more. No partner is necessary. Marilla Museum & Pioneer Place consists of a fine large display in what used to be a school in Marilla Township, a trapper/logger cabin, an 1870 two story log home, and a 1900 historic barn. All buildings are fully furnished and are a “step back in time” located at 9991 Marilla Road, 3 miles east of Copemish and 4 miles south of M-115 on Marilla Road.
