1980s Motifs

Marianne Gedigian (AS 80-81) is a professor of flute at the Butler School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin, and on faculty at the Brevard Music Center.  Marianne has performed on several John Williams’ movie scores, including “Saving Private Ryan” and “Schindler’s List.” She has served as acting principal flute with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.  As a chamber musician, she is a founding member of the Boston-based Walden Chamber Players and was a member of the Dorian Wind Quintet. Marianne has served on the faculties of Boston University’s College of Fine Arts, The Boston Conservatory, Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute and the Round Top Institute.

Gregory Loselle's (IAC 80, IAC St 81-92, ICA St 97, 06) poems, "Visitors to the Sunday Service," "Musical Heritage and a sonnet from the corona sequence" and "The Whole of Him Collected" placed first, second and third respectively in The Poetry of Society of Michigan's annual contest. His poem "Crossing to Fox Island," won the 2009 Robert Frost Poetry Award. The Spoon River Poetry Review has accepted Gregory's poem, "The Boat-Hoist De Profundis" for publication. Gregory's short story "Lazarus" won the 2009 Lorian Hemingway Short Story competition and will be published in the January/February 2009 edition of The Saturday Evening Post.

Brandon Ashcraft (IAA 80-82) has enjoyed a successful career in information technology, overseeing the development of large-scale, information-driven websites. He recently finished writing his first book, an autobiographical novel about his boarding school and college years. He will begin the process of editing and marketing it in 2010. He also enjoys mixing dance music on the side. Brandon lives in Brooklyn with his partner of five years, Arnold.

Shawn Keith (IAA 80-82) and his wife Jen welcomed their daughter Charis Elizabeth on November 4, 2009. He and his family live in Ludington, Mich. where they build and service pipe organs and run an international online consignment business.

John T. Unger (IAA 85-86) is a visual artist and lives and works in Mancelona, Mich. His most popular work is titled “The Great Bowl of Fire.” Other works can be found in 44 states and seven countries. One of his works was commissioned by the Spirit Ridge Vineyard Resort and Spa in Osoyoos, British Columbia, which is the last stop of the 2010 Olympic Torch.

Alexander Kerr (IAC 81-82 ) is the Linda and Jack Gill Chair for violin in the strings department at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

Sharon A Kowalsky (IAC 80-87, IAA 87-90) and Jorge Goldsmit are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Maximilian Joseph, born June 25, 2009, in Dallas, Texas. Sharon is an assistant professor of History at Texas A&M University-Commerce and recently published her book, "Deviant Women: Female Crime and Criminology in Revolutionary Russia, 1880-1930" (Northern Illinois University Press, 2009).  

Charles West (IAC 81, IAA 81-82) performs on board the Norwegian Sky. In the summer of 2009, he made his debut at Carnegie Hall in a production of “Show Boat” that featured Marilyn Horne.

Laurie (Householder) Orth (IAA 81-84) lives in Jacksonville, Fla. with her family after residing in Wales, United Kingdom for two years. She is the cantor every week at her church and has taken her first teaching job, teaching general music (Pre-K through 8th grade) in a Catholic school.  She spends her free time learning how to ride horses with her two sons and enjoy family golf outings.

Carolyn Huebl (AS 82-85, IAC Fac 01) is an assistant professor of violin at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University and violinist with the Blakemore Trio.

Elizabeth Marvel (IAC 82-83, IAA 83-87) appeared on “American Masters” on PBS in late December. She portrayed the lead character in “Louisa May Alcott; the Woman Behind Little Women,” a documentary based on a book of the same name by Harriet Reisen. Elizabeth is a three-time Off-Broadway “Obie” Award-winner and recently appeared in the pilot episode of “The Good Wife” on CBS.

Kimberly Meier-Sims (UW 82) is the director of the Sato Center for Suzuki Studies at Cleveland Institute of Music.

Hirschel (Harold) Moskoff (IAC 82-84, IAA 84-85) is the executive producer of the precursor to a full-length documentary film “The Soul of Mount Moriah, An Ancient Theory” directed by Brian K. Spector. The film is based Hirschel’s research about the temple mount and its possible secrets or mysteries. The introductory film can be found on YouTube by searching "Moskoff".

Liza Grossman (IAA 82-85, IAC Fac 99-present) is the founding music director of Cleveland's Contemporary Youth Orchestra and opened the orchestra's 15th season in December 2009 with a concert featuring all women composers.

Jennifer (Custer) Jackson (IAC 83-84, IAA 83-86) is living in the Sierra Nevada foothills with her husband Jeff and two dogs. Jennifer is a fourth grade teacher at the Cedar Springs Waldorf School in Placerville, Calif. She has taught the same students since first grade and plans to take them through eighth grade. Her students participate in music every day. She notes that her students are “amazing singers and becoming good strings players.”

Blair McMillen (IAC 83-84, IAA 84-88, IAC St 88-89) performed with the Avian Orchestra in December 2009 in Philadelphia, Wilmington, Delaware and New York City. His November 2009 performance at Columbia University’s Miller Theatre, honoring the work of the late composer, Ralph Shapey, received a positive review in the New York Times.

Andrea (Andria) Fiegel (IAA 83-85) left New York City in 2001 for a ghost town in the high desert of northern New Mexico. She has been documenting the music and dances of the Matachines in some of the older villages and writing. Her almost-completed first novel is called "Ghost Town Prom Queen." In 2007 she married Vicente Roybal and a year later gave birth to their son, Keshav. They live with their many dogs and horses and are renovating and restoring a 150-year old adobe home.

Dmitri Matheny (IAA 83-84) performed at Winterfest in Chandler, Ariz. in December 2009 and will perform at Anna's Jazz Island in Berkeley, Calif. in March 2010 to celebrate the release of his new CD.

DeLisa White (IAA 83-86) directed “At a Loss” at the Bleeker Street Theatre in January 2010. Her directing credits also include “Dark Soundings” and “The Yellow Wallpaper.”

David Alpar (IAC 84-85, IAA 85-88, IAC Staff 87) was named commander and conductor of the United States Air Force Band of Liberty at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts. He and his wife Melissa are expecting their eighth child in April 2010. The Band of Liberty will be releasing a CD with an original composition, “Symphony No. 1 for Wind Ensemble,” by James M. Stephenson, III (IAC 79-84, 86; IAA 83-86; IAC Fac 04, 08.)

Laura Carmichael (IAC 84-85, IAA 85-86) resides in Amsterdam where she performs on clarinet with the Ensemble MAE and Helios. Her 2009 highlights included performing with Robert Ashley at the Maerz Musik Festival at the Berliner Festspiele, a one-week residency at University of California, Davis with her project Duo X, and playing in the orchestra for Opera Spanga's production of "Elektra." She also performed on Tolga Tüzün's new CD "Periphery" released on AK Müzik.

Gregory Ceo (IAC 84-85, IAA 84-86, IAA Fac 91-99) is a freelance photographer in Savannah, Ga. and a full-time faculty member at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Greg visited Interlochen this past summer to see his niece Sofia DiFrancesco (IAC 07-09) and nephews Domenic DiFrancesco (IAC 07-08) and Vincent DiFrancesco (IAC 09).

Anthony DeMarco (IAC 84) is a violinst and member of the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra.

David Leavitt (IAC 84-87) recently married Marnie Burkman and moved from Boulder Colo. to Ann Arbor, Mich. Together they have launched a practice in integrative psychiatry and wellness center called Michigan Integrative Psychiatry. David played saxophone at Interlochen; presently he plays the didgeridoo after studying the instrument on trips to Australia. He hopes to begin composing ambient and drum and bass electronica at his home.

Timothy Christie (IAC 85-93, IAC St 95) is the violist with the Dexter String Quartet and the solo violist of the contemporary ensemble Brave New Works. He is an orchestra member of the Pacific Northwest Ballet and is the founder and artistic director of the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival.

Mary Beth (Rhodes) Woodruff (IAC 85, 87, IAA 87-89, IAC St 98) conducts the elementary and junior high orchestras Sinfonietta and Intermezzo in the Santa Barbara Strings program. She is co-director of the Santa Barbara Stings in Santa Barbara, Calif. Mary Beth also teaches violin and viola privately in Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez Valley, Calif.

Christopher P. Taylor (IAC 85-88) is an associate professor of piano at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He recently performed solo recitals at the Kennedy Center Shriver Hall concert Series, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the University of Chicago,
as well as appearing as a soloist with the Wichita Symphony.

Rebecca Topol (IAC 85, IAA 85-86) is a screenwriter, living in Los Angeles, Calif.  She has written the feature film, “The Ramen Girl” starring the late Brittany Murphy.

R. Ted Hogarth (IAA 85-89, IAC St 87-88) performed in the pit band for the Chicago production of “Jersey Boys” and performs with his band the Mulligan Mosaics Big Band.

Adryn Miller (IAC 86-87) was featured in the May/June 2009 issue of Singular Magazine.

Damian Kulash (IAC 87-89, 91-92) and Tim Nordwind (IAC 87-89, 91), members of the Grammy Award-winning band, OK Go recently released their new album “Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky” on the Capitol Records label. 

Nicholas Baumgartner (IAC 88-90, IAA 90-94, IAC St 94-96) and wife Kristin welcomed Valentin Laurence Imanuel Baumgartner on October 14, 2009. Nicholas and Kristin live in London, England.

Bruno Campos (IAA 88-91) is the voice of Prince Naveen / Frog in the new Disney animated family feature film “The Princess and the Frog.”

Jessica Cattelino (IAA 88-92) and Noah Zatz welcomed their daughter, Mica Ann Zattelino on November 6, 2009. Jessica is an associate professor of anthropology at the University of California Los Angeles.

Stephanie Shih-yu Cheng (IAA 88-90) is a Yamaha artist and presented piano recitals at the Yamaha Salon in New York City and on the Myra Hess Concert Series in Chicago in January 2010.

Kara McDonald (IAA 88-90) is a fellow-in-residence at the council on foreign relations in Washington, D.C. Prior to her fellowship, Kara was the director of United Nation affairs for the White House from 2007-09 through the Obama transition.

Julie (Jacobs) Vandenboom (IAC 89-92, IAC St 93, 95-98) has taken a position as a policy analyst with the State of Michigan.

Michael D. Jordan (IAC St 89-98, IAA St 96-98) and his wife Helena are the proud parents of Isabel Almeida Jordan born on December 11, 2009.

Anandah Carter (IAA 89-91, IAC St 92) is an elementary school music teacher at Rye Country Day school in Rye, N.Y.
