Cabin Counselor/Unit Leaders (additional stipend)

Job Title: Unit Leader

Reports to: Assistant Director/ Camp Life Division Director

Position Purpose:  As a leader in the camp division, unit leaders are responsible for cabins and counselors assigned to that unit.  Unit leaders conduct daily cabin inspections, mentor staff, and conduct the final head count at night.  They function as the primary resource to assist counselors in resolving issues within the cabin or unit.  Unit leaders provide cabin coverage for staff nights out and days off.  

Essential Job Functions:  In addition to the functions listed above, unit leaders also fulfill cabin counselor responsibilities and as such serve as the primary caregiver for students in their cabin and throughout the camp division.  The cabin counselor is responsible for the safety of students in their care, guides students in their personal growth during their session, and serves as a role model to students and staff in attitude, behavior, and actions. Cabin counselors are also responsible for explaining and establishing expectations for camper behavior and adhering to Interlochen Arts Camp policies for campers and staff.  

Other Job Duties:  The unit leader position is in place of a secondary job assignment. Unit leaders are assigned administrative responsibilities in the camp division including but not limited to:  travel, ticket or laundry coordinator, attendance monitor, or monitor of student accounts (Junior and Intermediate division only).  Unit leaders participate in the development and implementation of activities for campers within the division, assist in the supervision of campers on main camp, at performances and off campus. Unit leaders attend Administrative and divisional staff meetings and have frequent communication with parents.   

Equipment Used: Computer, phone, fire extinguisher, PA system.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple commitments, meet deadlines, and work as a team.
  • Experience with mentoring or supervision is desired.
  • A desire to work with youth, a willingness to live in a cabin and work in a rustic camp environment, an understanding of the developmental needs of youth.
  • An ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive and respectful manner.  
  • An ability to assist or lead recreation or waterfront activities is a plus.
  • An ability to communicate effectively and work both independently and as part of a larger team is essential.
  • Staff interested in working in the high school divisions need to have completed one year in college or the equivalent.

Compensation:  $300 added to base salary for cabin counselors ($1,100 includes room and board)
