Job Title: Health Services Assistant
Reports to: Director of Health and Wellness Services, and supervising RN
Position Purpose: To assist Camp Nurses in providing health care to campers aged 8—18 years. Also assist as needed with tasks supporting daily functioning of the department.
Essential Job Functions: Work with a group of campers, or in one of three health centers with a team consisting of a physician or nurse practitioner, nurses, other Health Services Assistants, and a secretary. The Health Services Assistant will:
- Be delegated tasks by the Camp Nurse including dispensing medications, dressing changes, providing first aid, and other duties as required for the population.
- Be available as needed during the camper day and at designated times in the health center.
- Be an integral part of camp life
- Be able to participate in camp activities as the schedule allows, and enjoy the lovely setting at Interlochen.
Other Job Duties: Health Services Assistants work 6 weeks, plus an additional 3-4 days of pre-camp training prior to the opening of the summer season. Other required training includes online training during the late spring, and a weekend of hands on training provided by the American Red Cross. The workweek includes an evening and a day off, and a few hours off during each day while the campers attend class. The daily schedule depends on the area of assignment, but generally starts with early with morning medications and open health center times, slows down while the campers attend class, then involves evening medications and visits. The Health Services Assistant lives on campus or in the health center, and all meals are provided.
Equipment Used: Basic computer skills and the ability to use e-mail are required. Some online training will be required prior the start of the camp season.
Qualifications: 18 years of age or graduated from high school required. Work or school experience in a related medical field preferred. Students with some clinical experience in a health professions school such as nursing or medicine are encouraged to apply. Flexibility and the ability to work in a team are essential. An appreciation for enjoying time in the outdoors and the arts is a plus.
Compensation: Salary for the 6 ½ week season is $2,100-2,500 and includes room and board, and class fees for Camp Health Officer training by the American Red Cross.
