Camp Life: High School Division

Cabin Life

Your home is a cabin; your family is the 10 to 18 other teens and counselors who share that cabin with you. And your new home is adjacent to a large lake. You have your own private beach, tennis courts, division headquarters and laundry.

In the High School Division, you do your own laundry. Optional laundry service is available for an extra charge.

Because we are committed to quality residence life, we employ only the best and brightest counselors. Most of our counselors are college students, or graduates. Many are artists, who can relate to your unique experiences.

When You're Not in Class

Students often ask: What do we do in the evenings? A typical night out with your friends can consist of ordering pizza, attending a concert, strolling the campus, viewing a Gallery exhibit, shopping in the Scholarshop or just enjoying a sundae at the Melody Freeze. A dance is held every Monday night, and co-recreational activities ("Co-Recs") take place weekly, allowing more time to spend together.

Here's a sampling of some of the activities campers enjoy:

  • Water volleyball
  • Tennis
  • Soccer
  • Swimming and sunbathing
  • Softball
  • Hiking
  • Sailing
  • Arts and crafts

Since there are no classes on Monday afternoons, except for a special practice or rehearsal, you can participate in an off-campus trip to hike Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, canoe the Platte River, or spend the day at Peterson Beach on Lake Michigan.

High School Boys enjoy the natural beauty of Duck Lake, while High School Girls relax on the warm sands of Green Lake. Besides swimming and boating, both can enjoy water volleyball or just enjoy the outdoors.

Both High School Boys and High School Girls eat at the Stone Student Center cafeteria on Main Campus. You can sample the five basic food groups - and then some. Vegetarian options are offered at every meal.

In the High School Division, you're on your own after dinner. Among the favorite activities is attending one of the scores of student, faculty/staff and guest artist presentations during the summer. Each summer, Interlochen presents an exciting lineup of world-renowned classical, jazz and pop musicians. Recent guest artists have included Josh Groban, Joshua Bell, Norah Jones, The Ahn Trio, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Decemberists, Rufus Wainwright, Wynton Marsalis, Guster, Turtle Island Quartet, Jewel, Wayne Shorter, Bob Dylan, Steely Dan and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Students can also enjoy numerous dance concerts, theatre performances, art exhibitions and film screenings.
