Academy Students Selected as Finalists in National Competition

Interlochen, Mich. - Seventeen Interlochen Arts Academy students have been selected as finalists for the 2009 national youngARTS competition. All finalists will travel to Miami for an all-expenses-paid week of master classes, showcase performances, exhibitions, interdisciplinary activities, enrichment programs, interviews, and final auditions during the second week of January.

More than 6,000 students applied and 141 finalists were chosen.

Winners will get prizes ranging from $10,000 in cash to master classes with renowned artists.

“Not only is this a significant honor for the students but for the entire Interlochen Center for the Arts community as well,” said Edward Farraday, vice president of education programs for Interlochen Center for the Arts. “This is a great achievement for our students and I commend their teachers too for their work in preparing them so well.”

Interlochen finalists include Alix Briggs, writing; Zachary Cook, theatre; Brianna Dewar, voice; Sean Dowgray, music instrumental; Joshua Epperson, voice; Michael Hanna, theatre; Carl Johanson, theatre; Steven Johnson, theatre; Evan Kardon, voice; Emily Koch, theatre; Miles Mykkanen, voice; Jordan Pemberton, visual arts; Ines Pujos, writing; Susanna Rizzo, theatre; Thomas Rust, visual arts; Tristan Savella, musical instrumental; and Helen Spica, writing.

youngARTS is the core program of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA).
