Concerto Competition and Honors Recital

INTERLOCHEN ARTS CAMP SUMMER 2014
Concerto and Honors Recital Competition

Please note: the extended submission deadline is Friday, May 16.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Interlochen offers a separate concerto competition for the High School and Intermediate Divisions, as well as an Honors Recital competition for the Junior Division. These competitions are competitive and only advanced students should enter. Winners in the High School and Intermediate Divisions will perform with one of the division's orchestras or wind ensembles. Junior competition winners will perform on a special Honors Recital scheduled at the end of each two-week Junior session.

The preliminary round of the competitions requires that students prepare a video audition, which can be submitted online. See below for instructions. The deadline for ALL competition applications and auditions is May 16, 2014.

High School and Intermediate students accepted into the finals will perform during the first week of camp (Intermediate finals June 26th, High School finals June 27th). Juniors will perform in a special Honors Recital scheduled at the end of each two-week session.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

The concerto and honors recital competitions are open to all instrumentalists (band, orchestra, jazz band), as well as vocalists, guitarists and pianists who have completed the regular admissions process and have been formally accepted to Interlochen Arts Camp.

High School and Intermediate competition entrants must be attending Interlochen for six weeks. Junior competition entrants may be attending for 2, 4 or 6 weeks.

The selection (one movement only for concertos; one movement or single piece for honors recitals) must be memorized. Those selected to proceed to the concerto finals or perform on an honors recital will be notified in writing by June 6th. Collaborative pianists will be assigned to accompany each concerto finalist and honors recital performer prior to the beginning of camp.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Auditions should be accompanied.
  • Auditions must be in video format – faulty videos will be disqualified.
  • If selected, you will be playing the submitted auditioned piece in the final competition (or recital for Juniors Honors winners). There is a 10 minute maximum time limit for the competition although winners of the competition who are selected to play with orchestra (High School and Intermediate) are allowed to perform the chosen movement in its entirety.
  • Intermediate division: There is no required repertoire. The list of approved music below may be used as a guideline, but is not required.

Vocal submissions for the Interlochen high school concerto competition need to be pieces that are fully orchestrated works. It is important that all submissions be appropriate for the student's age and current level of vocal development. If students are not sure if a proposed piece is developmentally appropriate, they should carefully check this with their home based vocal instructor before making the submission
