Chinese and Japanese Ceramics Techniques Workshop
This workshop will focus on Chinese and Japanese techniques of producing ceramics. Whether the student has an interest in wheel throwing or hand building, this workshop will offer time and space to explore different ceramic processes from Asia. Recommended levels are beginning through advanced. 
Course objectives:
- Explore the creative and imaginative potential of clay.
- Participants will gain awareness of Japanese and Chinese ceramic techniques and improve their existing skills.
- Learn to speak about the work achieved through one on one and group conversations.
- Explore techniques either on the wheel or hand building.
- Experiment with different firing methods, such as Raku, pit firing, electric and gas firing.
- Critique ideas with the instructors and other classmates.
- Further the participant’s technical knowledge and skills.
- Create a piece of completed ceramic work.
- Have daily discussion about ceramic topics.
- Discuss contemporary ideas about making.
- Slide lectures about ceramic history.
Dates of Workshop: June 17-21 and August 9-13, 2006; 1pm-6pm
Faculty: Valerie Zimany has received her MFA from Kanazawa College of Art, Japan and was an Artist in Residence at Utatsuyama Craft Workshop in Kanazawa, Japan. Daniel Bare completed his MFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2003, last year he was Artist in Residence at the Pottery Workshop Shanghai, China. Tuition: $319 plus $65 material fee
Enrollment: This workshop is limited to 15 participants.
Registration Deadline: The August workshop did not meet minimum enrollment and has been cancelled.
Cancellation/Refund Policy: No tuition refunds will be given after July 26 unless another participant is available to take the opening. All refunds will be less 7.5% for processing. If an under-subscribed event is cancelled, all refunds are 100%.
Housing and Meals: Lodging is available on the Interlochen campus on a first-come, first-served basis. Accommodations range from residence hall rooms to housekeeping cottages at a variety of rates.
