Workshop Artistic Director: Heidi Johnson
Listen to a message from Interlochen Digital Photography Artistic Director Heidi Johnson
Heidi Johnson was born in Traverse City and has been working in her darkroom and dedicated to learning all things photography since age 12. She is a fine art, editorial and commercial photographer working with both film and digital techniques.
As an Interlochen Arts Academy Artist-in-residence, she taught photography to academy students and later worked as staff marketing photographer for Interlochen Center for the Arts. Her editorial and commercial clients have included: HOUR Magazine, The Strad Magazine, Brauer Productions, Warner Brothers, Cedar Living Magazine, Weird Michigan, Sherwin Williams and Detroit Home Magazine.
In the recent decade, Johnson has combined her three passions: history, photography and the beauty of northern Michigan landscapes to produce ethereal images using her favored medium of high speed black and white infrared film. Featuring much of this work, her first book, Angels in the Architecture: A Photographic Elegy to an American Asylum, has become local best-seller and was awarded a Michigan Notable Book Award in 2002. Currently, Heidi is working on her next book creating fine art images inspired by the history of northern Michigan.
