Painting en plein aire (in the open air) first gained popularity in Europe in the 19th Century, particularly in France with painters such as Cezanne and Monet.
The Interlochen Plein Aire Painting Workshop is designed for adults who wish to go into depth exploring the landscape. This five day painting workshop involves small field trips in and around the Interlochen campus and the nearby Michigan Legacy Art Park.
Located on 1,200 acres of diverse topography between two large lakes and surrounded by deciduous and evergreen forest, Interlochen’s campus places the plein aire painter in the heart of the beautiful northern Michigan landscape.
