Overview

The Vocal Soloist Studies Program addresses the individual training requirements of the young classical solo singer. This program is designed for highly motivated students aspiring to further their training as young artists.

This intensive four-week program provides training on multiple levels and is designed to enrich the "whole" singer.

Accepted students will be required to arrive at camp with three memorized performance-ready classical pieces.

Program Details

  • Weekly one hour private voice lessons focus on advanced classical technique and appropriate repertoire.
  • Vocal Diction Classes use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and broaden singers' skills.
  • Acting and stage movement instruction helps students prepare for the challenges of dramatic presentations and helps to enhance interpretive skills.
  • Music History and Literature Class surveys the major periods of classical composition and is complemented by live in-class performances by summer faculty, highlighting the given musical period and composers.
  • Opera Workshop Class is a performance medium that uses talent-appropriate literature, culminating with a public performance of opera scenes at the end of the session. Master Classes with distinguished vocal instructors and public solo recitals round out the performance opportunities that the Vocal Soloist Studies Program provides.
  • Dedicated practice time.

Entrance into this program is highly competitive and limited. Early application is recommended.

Due to the intensive nature of this program, students do not participate in additional elective courses.

Audition Requirements

  • Select and memorize two classical music selections. No musical theatre pieces, please.
  • Record these pieces with piano accompaniment on a VHS tape (US format) or DVD (preferred).
  • Submit the audition and label the recording and its casing with the applicant's full name, the program notation "H.S. Vocal Soloist Studies" and presented repertoire.

Applicants for the Vocal Soloist Studies Program will be considered for the Choral and Operetta Program automatically.
