High School Summer Guitar Program ::

Overview

The Interlochen Summer Guitar Program offers intensive training to the serious guitar student. Guitar students who choose a jazz emphasis participate in the jazz program and select from a wide range of guitar classes and ensembles. Students with a classical emphasis choose from a full array of guitar classes, ensembles and personalized instruction.

Each week, guitar students take two private lessons, one jazz and one classical.

Program Details

Guitar Technique Workshop: This class emphasizes musical as well as technical development. Topics will include aim-directed movement and left-hand accuracy, practice strategies, speed development, phrasing and interpretation, tone production and performing with confidence.

Learn from the Masters Transcription Class: Study guitar styles of the great blues, rock and jazz guitarists including Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery and many others. This class is taught hands-on, including note-for-note transcriptions and ear training for guitarists.

Audition Requirements

  • Choose two representative solo works of contrasting styles, demonstrating tone, technical facility and interpretation.
  • Record two solo works of contrasting style on a CD or DVD.
  • Submit the audition and label the recording and its casing with the applicant's full name, the program notation "H.S. Guitar" and presented repertoire.
