Overview
This course is designed for students who would like to develop and expand their portfolios in photography. Students focus on photography as a means of image-making through the exploration of various photographic genres and the handling of light, both in and outside of the studio. The course also will focus on the fundamentals of compositional arrangement and students will investigate the medium as a method for self-expression. Short lectures and presentations will cover some aspects of photographic history and contemporary trends.

The Visual Arts Portfolio Institutes include:
- intensive class sessions
- workshops and seminars focused on concepts of portfolio development
- daily presentations and portfolio reviews by college representatives
- open studio time for students to continue working on projects
Other subjects covered during the Institute include:
- how to research schools and programs to find the best match
- specific requirements for the application process
- how to present yourself and your work to a panel
- how to document your work
Facilities
In 2009, the visual arts programs will relocate to the new Dow Center for Visual Arts. This exceptional facility includes separate studios for ceramics, sculpture, painting, drawing, metals, digital arts, photography, printmaking and fibers. The light-filled complex also features a professional gallery space for exhibitions.
Prerequisite
Students must have prior experience in black and white film processing and printing. Students must bring documentation of finished works in addition to the pieces submitted for application consideration. Please exercise care in transporting original works.
Portfolio Requirements
- Prepare a portfolio including a minimum of five images that have been created through standard black and white processing techniques.
- Submit the portfolio via email to admission@interlochen.org and include in the subject line "Photography Portfolio, Institute" and the applicant's full name.
- Portfolios may also be submitted by mail, presented in slide or photography format, in clear plastic sleeves, with the applicant's full name and program clearly indicated on each item.
