Overview
Study with some of the finest chamber musicians performing today. Two prominent string quartets will be guest artists-in-residence for two weeks each. Quartets for 2009 are the Arianna String Quartet and the Maia Quartet.
Enrollment is limited to sixteen students, comprising four quartets. Pre-formed quartets will not be accepted as a group.
Program Details
- Four hours of rehearsal daily
- Students work with faculty in weekly private lessons and daily quartet coaching with members of guest quartet-in-residence.
- Quartets perform weekly and solo performance opportunities are available.
Due to the intensity of the program, Advanced String Quartet Program students are not able to participate in additional electives courses.
Audition Requirements
- Choose one piece from the repertoire list on this page.
- Select a second piecethat best demonstrates technical skill and musicianship.
- Prepare one major and one minor scale.
- Record the scales and pieces on a CD or DVD.
- Submit the audition and label the recording and its casing with the applicant's full name, division, the program notation "Adv. String Quartet" and presented repertoire.

VIOLIN
First movement from one of the following concerti:
- Mozart - Concerto No. 3, 4, or 5
- Bruch - Concerto No. 1
- Lalo - Symphonie Espagnole
- Saint-Saens - Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso or a piece of comparable difficulty.
VIOLA
First movement from one of the following:
- Bloch - Suite Hebraique
- Hoffmeister - Concerto in D Major
- Stamitz - Concerto in D Major
- J.C. Bach - Concerto
- Walton - Concerto
- Handel - Concerto or a piece of comparable difficulty.
CELLO
First movement from one of the following concerti:
- Boccherini, Elgar, Haydn C Major, Lalo, Saint-Sadns, Kabalevsky Op. 49 or Shostakovich 1, or a piece of comparable difficulty.
