Class of 1984 Newsletters :: March 2006 ::

Greetings, Class of '84 and Happy New Year!

Lots of news to share with you from our classmates. First of all, here is a great big thank you to all of you who have given to the Class of 1984 Scholarship. We’ve raised a total of $14,200 since we kicked off this project in April of 2005. So far, $7,000 has been awarded to Tyler Collins, a Theater major from Anchorage, Alaska for the 05-06 school year. We’ve already got $7,200 to go towards the next school year. (And we can still raise more by May 31 - Please join us!) It’s very exciting. I’ve received a picture of Tyler and it really hits home and makes this real to see the recipient of our gifts.

As with our past newsletters, I have received these updates over the last several months, so keep that in mind when you read them. One very important note from Hurricane Katrina, our two classmates from New Orleans, Lise Ferraro and Beth Denton are both safe (I am including a note from Lise). Interlochen put out an all points bulletin right after the hurricane to the class reps to try to locate alumni from New Orleans and I am so pleased to report that it took our class network less than 24 hours to find Lise and Beth, right after the storm, and that they were in Austin, TX. Thanks to Hillary Aptowitz, Diedra Kovak and Tom Sudinski for helping with that search.

Well, get a cup of something, get comfy and enjoy...

All is well here...just ending the last 3 weeks of our Detroit Symphony season, then a week's break, then into our summer season (which I love because we play only outdoor concerts.  I love watching the audience sitting on their picnic blankets sharing family-time with us!).  We will go up to play a concert at Interlochen as we do every year on July 22... that's always a highlight of my summer.

(but wait, there’s more)

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!  It's snowing here today in Detroit...lovely BIG snowflakes.  A perfect day for staying indoors and getting some holiday decorations up!

As of September 2005, I was added to the Adjunct Viola Faculty at the University of Michigan. I am also currently in my 10th season as a violist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

David Downing

I'm at a conference so this will be short. We had girl #3 on August 8th! Mia Kathyrn.  Needless to say where pretty busy! I have a house filled with women.

Nathan Hesselink

I wanted to let you know that my family has moved as well. I'm now living in Vancouver, Canada, where I've accepted a new job (still in ethnomusicology) at the University of British Columbia. Once I've settled in I'll send you more info, as well as some gorgeous pictures of the area.

I hope you're enjoying your new environs as much as we are!

(Part 2 from Nathan)

Yes, we've settled in to life here in Vancouver and all of us love it. It's a much better work situation here at UBC (not to mention the natural surroundings), my son's (Braque) school is a lot more diverse, and my wife Serra is enjoying the extra time to compose as she looks for new work here. I've attached a couple of pictures from this summer you an include in the Newsletter if you like (the first is with my brother Greg -- IAA '86), the second with Greg and my son Braque (both are from Grouse mountain just north of downtown Vancouver.

Nathan’s son Braque and his uncle, Greg Hesselink.

Cindy Fox Crawford:

We're still in the Bay Area, but my husband was recently promoted, and we'll be moving to Pasadena. Are any of "us" there? I won't know a soul. No other news except that I've gone (part-time) back to school and am at CCA in Oakland. Anyone else there, either?

(I go at night.)

Happy New Year and thanks!

Lise Ferraro:

Thanks for emailing.I am okay.I evacuated before the storm with my husband and cat.We boarded up the house and got out.We stayed a few days in Houston and are now in Austin for a week.Just sort of hopping around to available places until we figure out what to do.I have no idea what to do.I've gotten reports that our house is still above water, but I don't know if it has a roof or what.Lots of people have called and emailed.I heard from Sarah Hackett today and I hadn't heard from her in years.I tried before the last reunion but never got a response. She apologized for not returning my calls and then offered me the moon if we needed it.Very generous.I was supposed to leave yesterday for a trip to California to see Tom Sudinsky and Norm Korpi, but obviously had to cancel.I was crushed.I was imagining some crazy adventure with digital photos we could submit to the next alumni newsletter.I have a credit to fly later, so maybe that will still happen. In the mean time I have been so touched by everyone's concern and offers of help and shelter...I really feel blessed to have so many people think of me and my family during this crazy time.My universe has really turned upside down.I have no idea what to do or what the future holds. So until I figure that out, I am going to try and enjoy the hospitality of friends and strangers here in beautiful Austin, Texas. Eventually we will probably make our way up to my brother's house in Ada, Michigan.

I was not in touch with Beth Denton in New Orleans, but I believe she lives uptown and it is my understanding that the area did not flood so badly.People can post messages looking for other people on www.nola.com which is the website for the Times-Picayune.I tried it and I don't think it worked, but I will try again.I've lost track of a friend whom I don't believe got out before the storm.

Well, thank you again for your concern and good wishes.

(Lise’s Part 2)

Hello!

We returned to New Orleans just after Thanksgiving. We've been very lucky. Our damage is minor compared to the majority of the city.No flooding.

I don't have a land line, but my cell phone is 504-931-5424.My address is 831 Gallier street, New Orleans, LA 70117.We only get the mail about once a week.Internet access is limited.I am at awireless cafe at the moment.

It's great to be back.I am simultaneously filled with joy and sadness, hopefulness and despair. The locals seem to be perched precariously on the edge of madness.

Affectionately,

Lise

(Lise’s Part 3)

Not a whole lot has happened since I last wrote.

New Orleans is really messed up.It's very sad.It is also a very interesting time to live here.Let's hope some good can come out of this and that New Orleans will be rebuilt stronger and better with its soul still intact.Having lived here for 12 years I can't help but be plagued by doubts, but I am an optimist.Anything can happen.

I would like to thank all the Interlochen alumni who offered us places to stay all over the country.Fom New Hampshire to California we got offers from Sarah Sandback (Hackett), Tom Sudinsky, Norm Korpi, Lisa Siegel, Aimee Beaubien, Kim Baker, Laurie Orth (Householder), and Cindy Crawford (Fox).Words cannot express how touched I was by these offers. It meant a lot. Please forgive me if I failed to mention anyone. My mind doesn't function as efficiently as it did before the storm.Hopefully this is not a permanent condition.

Here's to a terrific 2006!

Lise

Teri Morrison:

I sang Rosina in 'The Barber of Seville' with a company in MS called the Como Opera Guild in June as well and will be giving a faculty recital at The University of Memphis in September and then will be going back to MS for a Gala Benefit with Como.

I have been offered a part-time voice teaching position with a private high school Conservatory of Music here in Memphis and will be starting there in Sept too. So when Fall hits it will be off and running!

Got a lot of house projects going now- you know how they never end!

We will be going to Kansas for Xmas this year as I have been invited to sing the Poulenc "Gloria" with my hometown Symphony. I am really excited about it! And of course my family is thrilled that I am finally getting a chance to sing closer to home!

All the best to you and yours,

Teri

Laurie (Housholder) Orth:

Well, we’re feeling like Atlanta is more like home now. We’ve been here almost 6 months. There have been lots of learning curves, like where the grocery story is, how to get around in busy, busy northern Atlanta and all the other things like new doctors, dentists, schools, friends, etc.I have worked a good bit with the Alumni Office at Interlochen in the fall on our class project. They sent me a cool Interlochen poster and I’ve bought a frame for it just a few days ago, so it’ll go up in my office this week.I did receive a very nice “Welcome to ” phone call this summer from Marcel Marchetti who is stationed in GA with the Air Force.

My boys are enjoying life again with daily interaction with their dad, as we made the move to Altanta so that we could end the weekly commuting that John was doing from Atlanta to Pittsburgh. We take off frequently to have “lunch with Daddy” at the Chic Fillet near his office. We have had a few medical scares with our 4 year old son Emmitt, with 3 trips to the ER since moving here, and we’re working with his diagnosis of Hypoglycemia.(Low Blood Sugar) Just tweaking his eating schedule and changing his food choices a bit, after some very scary experiences.

My New Year’s resolution is to start taking Yoga!!I’ll keep you posted on how that goes.

On the Mary Kay business front, I’ve started up my business again here and it’s so nice to meet new friends through my business. No singing gigs yet, unless you count singing in the car to the radio or to the boys at bedtime.

Please continue to send me your news.My contact info is:
