2007-2008 TESTING INFORMATION

A full range of standardized testing is available to Interlochen students. Students are advised to discuss with their counselors which tests should be considered and when they should be taken so as to assure a smooth college application process.

A typical testing sequence for students includes:

Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT): Required of all IAA juniors. The only examination used to determine qualifiers to the National Merit Scholarship Program. Administered on IAA campus in October.

American College Test (ACT): One of two college entrance exam options available to IAA students which is usually taken at the end of the junior year. Includes sections on English, mathematics, science, social sciences. Administered at nearby Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) on five national test dates. Registration materials are available in IAA Counseling Services. Registration deadlines are critical because transportation is provided for IAA students only to the NMC Traverse City testing site.

Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT): The second of two college entrance exam options available to IAA students. It may not be necessary for students to take both ACT and SAT. Includes sections on English and mathematics. Administered on three national tests dates at nearby Northwestern Michigan College, and twice on IAA campus. Registration deadlines are critical because transportation is provided for IAA students only to NMC in Traverse City testing site.

Scholastic Aptitude Test II (SAT II): Individual subject-matter exams required by some colleges and universities, in addition to SAT. May not be taken on the same day as SAT II. Advanced planning is required. Students are advised to meet with their counselors. Administered on three national test dates at nearby Northwestern Michigan College, and twice on IAA campus.

Students are urged to register early (at least one month) for any of the above tests as seating may be limited and sites fill up. If you get sent to another site other than NMC, transportation will not be provided. Testing delays may seriously hamper the college application process.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Interlochen provides the IBTToefl which tests in the areas listening, speaking, reading and writing English.  Additional information can be found on line at www.ets.org/toefl
