Focusing on Your Art

While at the Academy, you will receive pre-professional training in your arts area and rigorous academic preparation for college. Finding a balance between these two commitments may be your greatest challenge. Instructors, counselors and staff are here to assist you with managing your time, recognizing your abilities and limitations, and helping you attain your goals.

Residence Life

The Academy is unique compared to other boarding schools. Most boarding schools require their faculty to also assume residence life responsibilities. At Interlochen, students are the priority, and the Academy employs a full-time Residence Life staff in addition to our teaching faculty. Since the Academy's founding, we have felt that having two separate staffs enables us to provide a better experience and greater support for our students. Our Dean of Students and Education Services works with the Residence Hall directors to oversee a staff of 19 Residence Hall Counselors and four Housemothers.

Built-in Fan Clubs

If you are like most students at Interlochen, this will be your first experience living away from home. Getting used to a new schedule, making friends and having an unknown roommate will be challenges you face, but you will have this in common with many of the students around you.

Half of the student body is new each year, so there is no "old guard" that determines the style of student life. Many of our students remark that this is the first time in their lives that they felt understood by their peers.

Our students are unlike the typical boarding school student. Many would never have considered attending a boarding school had it not been for Interlochen's focus on the arts and academics. Our students want to be here; most of them convinced their parents they would like to study away from home. This motivation is apparent, and it carries over into everyone's daily lives.

Your friends are likely to come from different majors, and by supporting them at their performances and exhibits, you will learn a lot about other arts areas. Many of our alumni work today in their arts area, but many also have gone into other fields as a result of their exposure to all the arts - and academics.

Social Life

When it's time to take a break from school commitments, there are many opportunities for socializing at Interlochen. Activities scheduled each weekend by the Student Activities Committee include dances, coffeehouses, videos and large-screen films, while many smaller-scale events happen spontaneously.

The list of on-campus activities can seem endless. For starters, there are theatre performances, coffeehouses, dances, art exhibits, orchestra, band and small ensemble concerts, readings, recitals, movies and jam sessions. Students also have numerous opportunities to see Interlochen Arts Festival performances at substantially reduced prices.

A Safe Space

Interlochen staffs a 24-hour security office and employs five full-time and four part-time security officers. Intrusion and fire alarms operate in all residence halls, and each room receives a monthly fire and safety inspection.

Health Services

Interlochen offers a complete Health Service facility for our students. Our Health Services Clinic is open 16 hours a day most days for examination and treatment of ill and injured students. In addition, a nurse is on site 24 hours a day. Students requiring supervised medical care or observation are housed in the Health Services Clinic.

Our staff physician schedules regular office hours two mornings each week and is available for examination, treatment and referral. Staff nurses also visit the residence halls to provide health education in small groups, in addition to one-on-one health counseling.

In addition to physical health care, Health Services provides a personal counselor to assist students in personal issues in a confidential, individual setting or a group setting.  The personal counselor works with students on learning appropriate coping skills for the situations presented.  If necessary, the personal counselor may also assist with referrals to qualified, local, Mental Health professionals.

Other services offered include: medical excuses from classes as necessary; appointments scheduled in Traverse City (orthodontist, optometrist, etc.); referrals to medical specialists; procurement of medication for students; and provision of medical equipment on loan (crutches, heating pads, ice packs, etc.). The Grand Traverse area is served by Munson Medical Center, a regional referral hospital with nearly 300 physicians practicing in 35 specialties.
