Dance majors perform in the Interlochen Dance Ensemble, the Academy’s resident regional company. This provides a professionally-oriented company environment that is an integral component of the Academy dance program. IDE productions afford majors the opportunity to hone their performance skills; to experience the rewards of daily work in classes and rehearsals; and to develop as ensemble members.
Three fully produced dance concerts are presented each year. The holiday season performance is a full length, classical ballet which alternates between "The Nutcracker," "Sleeping Beauty" and "Coppelia." This production and the Winter and Spring dance concerts are open to the public and feature original choreography by faculty and guests, professional costuming, scenery and lighting design. Seniors, through the composition class, produce a senior concert.
Improvisation and choreography classes inspire creativity and self-exploration and are an integral part of the Interlochen dance program. Student choreography is showcased each year in an annual studio performance produced by graduating seniors. These student choreographed concerts, supervised by guest and resident faculty, provide dancers with the opportunity to develop their choreographic skills and gain experience in other areas of dance production.
