Interlochen Arts Academy New Student Class Registration Information

Please read all of the following information carefully before completing and submitting your class registration.

Final Transcripts:
To ensure proper selection of classes, it is imperative that a final transcript, including test scores, from your student's previous school be received as soon as possible at the completion of the school year.  Schedules will not be processed unless the final year end transcript has been received.

Please note: When requesting an end-of-year official transcript from your home high school, it is strongly recommended that the request be made for six additional official end-of-year transcripts, as they will be needed for the college application process.

Please send your seven transcripts to:

Academic and College Counseling Office
Interlochen Arts Academy
PO Box 199
4000 Hwy. M-137
Interlochen, MI 49643

Concerning the Form:

Once you have accessed the class registration form:

  • Click on the pull down menu next to the class hour of your choice to select your class.
  • Keep your selected classes in period order (1,2,3 etc)
  • If you have selected a two-hour Studio class, Band, Orchestra, Ecology or ESL class make sure you place that class in both hours it is in session.
  • Remember to include lunch and at least one free hour in your schedule (to take more than 7 hours of instruction you must be granted special permission).
  • Private Lesson: mark the hour in the schedule as "Private Lesson" and place the information (private lesson and corresponding number located on the Private Lesson Chart) on the space provided below the schedule. List the appropriate number for hour or half hour lesson.
  • Both semesters must be completed for the registration form to be valid.

Concerning Interlochen Requirements:

Note the following when completing your schedule:

  • Due to class size limits the Academy reserves the right to substitute course choices and change requested hours.
  • Know the Interlochen graduation requirements.
  • All students must enroll in and maintain a minimum of 5 hours of class per day, including at least one academic. Chamber Music does not count toward this minimum; it should be scheduled in addition to the five classes.
  • A one year Senior must earn a minimum of 6 credits including at least 1 academic credit to graduate.
  • You must have 1.5 credits of an upper-level U.S. History/Political Science Class to graduate.
  • You must have 1 credit of Physical Education or equivalent (General Dance, Dance for Musical Theatre, Dance Major) in either grade 9 or 10.
  • A private lesson counts as a class period.
  • Students wishing to schedule a private lesson outside their major, must audition for the lesson and have the permission of the Chair of the Music Department. A final decision will not be made until studio size is determined in the fall.
  • Please refer to the Course Description regarding specific requirements for your major.
  • Class registration forms must be signed by faculty members as directed on the form.

Concerning College Requirements:

Note the following when completing your schedule:

  • College and Conservatories are not looking for light Senior loads.
  • The completed Junior year academic schedule and grades are the ones which will be sent with College applications in the fall of the Senior year.
  • Know the requirements for the Colleges you hope to apply to.
  • Colleges are seeking:
    4 years of English
2-4 Years of Math (minimum of AlgebraI, Geometry, Algebra II for standardized testing purposes)
2-4 Years of Science (balanced between lab and earth sciences)
    2-4 Years of Social Science
Minimum of 2 years of study in the same Foreign Language

As per Interlochen policy, student schedules will not be entered into the system until a financial commitment (deposit) has been received by Interlochen.

Schedule Timeline/Process:
Student Schedules will be collected and reviewed through the Spring and Summer months.  The nature of the audition process and "major" seating in specific classes cause schedules to be in a state of continual review and change up to the first day of classes.

Initial, preliminary schedules will be given to students upon arrival and check-in during Opening registration.

Final schedules will be completed following auditions and placement exams and provided to the students on Monday afternoon prior to the beginning of class on Tuesday.
