:: Why Interlochen?

"Those who graduate from Interlochen Arts Academy are armed for life. Students learn that success in life is predicated almost entirely upon preparation: If they see the value in practicing for a concert or studying for an exam, then they will surely see the value of attending the Academy for their future careers, including those careers which are not directly arts-related." - Adam Kohne, Organ major, Salem, Oregon

The Liberal Arts Division is composed of the English, History/Political Science, World Languages and English as a Second Language departments. We offer a college-preparatory curriculum emphasizing the interrelationships among our disciplines and the fine arts. The teaching methods we employ are based on the conviction that language, dialogue, reflection and imagination lead to insight, perspective, critical evaluation and creativity - skills that young artists and scholars need to understand and interpret the human experience as it has evolved through the ages.

From foundation-level courses through upper-level electives, classes are small and personal. Our goal is to provide an atmosphere for relevant discussion, exploration and idea exchange among bright, inquisitive students. Coursework at Interlochen is academically accelerated and challenging. Students who choose to take the Advanced Placement and Achievement Tests of the College Board consistently earn top scores. Our graduates are admitted to the most selective colleges, universities and conservatories in the nation. Alumni report that the education they received at the Academy prepared them well for their continued studies.

Liberal Arts faculty are individuals with exemplary preparation and professional expertise who take tremendous pride in their work and their students' accomplishments. The dedication, enthusiasm and sensitivity they bring to the arts are truly impressive. They are committed to maintaining an individualized and supportive educational climate.
