The writing portfolio should reflect your interest in and ability with language, poetry, fiction or nonfiction and should include examples of your best work. It should be typed and proofread. Portfolio pieces should be presented in standard format with 1-inch margins, black ink, double-spaced using Times New Roman font, size 11. The portfolio should consist of eight to ten pieces of original work written or revised during the last year, including:
- Two or three pieces of short fiction (short stories)
- Four or five pieces of poetry using a variety of styles, forms and subjects
- Two or three pieces of non-fiction in the style of a creative, personal or reflective essay, not a report for school
Supplemental works may include a school paper, essay, or report; an original play no longer than ten pages in proper manuscript form; or, a wild card that could be a journal entry, a letter, or anything not listed as a requirement. Candidates who are unable to present all of the suggested portfolio materials should submit as many of the requirements as possible accompanied by written teacher evaluation(s) detailing the candidate’s interests and writing ability.
