Department Philosophy ::

Statement of Philosophy

The Interlochen Arts Academy Visual Arts program develops a student's capacity for expression through a correlation between the visual arts and an awareness of the students' broader environment. Interlochen's location, two-hour studios, critiques, rigorous academics, guest artists, and the integration between departments support this unique environment. The program promotes the development of fundamental skills, knowledge of art principles, individual aesthetic expression, visual interpretation, visual fluency and critical thinking.

Objectives

  • To provide a curriculum and an environment which supports and encourages critical thinking and problem solving.
  • To provide dedicated and professional instruction in a variety of disciplines.
  • To provide the facilities and equipment necessary for an in-depth educational experience in visual art.
  • To make students aware of exhibition venues and professional opportunities.
  • To incorporate contemporary and traditional art issues into the studio experience.
  • To encourage interdisciplinary thinking in pursuit of a personal aesthetic.
  • To offer a variety of 2D and 3D studio classes.
