Theatre Design and Production ::

DESCRIPTION OF COURSES - THEATRE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION

ELEMENTS OF PRODUCTION
Required grades 9-12
Strongly Recommended grade 10
Theatre students have priority seating
Seating open to non-Theatre majors space permitting, by audition
and Semester 2
Course offered Semester 1
.50 credits per semester, meets daily

Basic stage-craft for all design areas.  An introduction to the craft of theatrical production, concentrating upon tools, materials, and construction techniques used to implement design.  The student will also be exposed to stage-management, makeup methodology, theatre organization, and management.

Further topics include: theatrical languages and their use, understanding ground plans, basic scenic stagecraft, basic lighting stagecraft, basic costume stagecraft, and props construction.

NOTE:  Proficiency in shop work must be satisfactorily demonstrated at the end of the semester or student may be required to repeat the class.

FUNDAMENTALS OF DESIGN
Prerequisite: Elements of Production or by Instructor permission
Full year course
.50 credits per semester, meets daily


Fundamentals of Design is a studio class that addresses elements of design as well as principles of design in relation to the theatre.  The student will work with script analysis and research techniques for the theatrical designer.

Topics include: design approach and process, text analysis, fundamentals of scenic design, specialized make-up and effects, fundamentals of costume design, fundamentals of lighting design, and fundamentals of sound design.

INDEPENDENT STUDIES/DESIGN AND PRODUCTION APPRENTICESHIPS
Prerequisite: Elements of Production, Fundamentals of Design or by Instructor permission
Semester course
.50 credits per semester, meets per arrangement with instructor

Scenic Design
Lighting Design
Costume Design
Sound Design
Stage Management

Independent studies will be organized and graded by the Technical Theatre faculty member in conjunction with the campus supervisor (personnel of the Costume Shop, IPR Productions, Corson Production Services, individual faculty director, and/or other designated instructor).  Apprenticeships may incorporate tests and approaches described in those design courses listed above.
