Our writing instructors believe in the power of imagination to inspire writing. We nurture that. Then, as much as we embrace inspiration, we embrace the spine-chilling, death-defying process of revision and applied craft. Once you’ve engaged in this vital sequence of changes, your poem, short story or play will never be the same. Nor will you—because you’ll better understand how to write. BUT after a poem has been workshopped and fully revised, it doesn’t just sit quietly in a folder. As soon as you feel comfortable doing so, we encourage you to submit your writing. Though it is certainly not the most important measure of your success, it is one of the practical ways you can build your credibility and prepare a portfolio for college. We offer both serious and fun submission opportunities in the Interlochen Review and Red Wheelbarrow—as well as personal chapbooks and class books. We also notify students about outside submission opportunities such as ARTS and Scholastic Writing contests.
