Students who wish to pursue Creative Writing as a major must submit a portfolio which reflects their interest in and ability with language, poetry, fiction or nonfiction. In it you should include examples of your best work. It should be typed and proofread. Because we want to focus on your words, please don’t use fancy fonts or clever presentation. Use a standard format with a cover.
Your portfolio should consist of eight to ten pieces of writing, including:
- Two or three pieces of short fiction (short stories).
- Four or five pieces of poetry. Offer us a variety of styles, forms and subjects.
- Two or three pieces of non-fiction. The non-fiction should be in the style of a
creative, personal or reflective essay, not a report for school.
Optional selections: Once you have met the above requirements you may also include one of the following:
- One school paper. This could be a report or a class essay.
- One play of no more than ten pages in proper manuscript format.
- A wild card. This could be a journal entry, a letter or something not included in the list
above.
Please do not send books you have self-published. Please send work you have written or revised in the last year.
Beginning writing students with limited portfolios should ask teachers to write evaluations of their interest/ability in the area of creative writing.
