Science Deparment course descriptions

We recognize that there's a wonderful marriage between the arts and sciences. The young people here have the talent and ability to express themselves through an art form, giving them tremendous power to educate and share with others. If students leave here with an understanding, an appreciation - even a love - of the natural world, the physical world, and those aspects of science, they're in so many ways doing more for society-at-large than a strict scientist. We're trying to teach science with a human face, but do it in a way that's enjoyable and relevant to our students' present and future lives through the use of technology.

Our math classes teach students how to truly think. Math doesn't have to be rote memorization of meaningless formulas. You have to be able to figure out things and apply what you're learning to real-life situations.

Academy Math and Science Division students get their hands dirty and their feet wet in some of the most interesting places. For instance:

* Scaling to new heights in the canopy of the Belizean and Peruvian rainforests on the annual elective tropical ecology trip to Latin America.

* Conducting aquatic studies and visiting the shores of Lake Michigan

* Experiencing the wilderness of the Manitou Islands of Lake Michigan

* Sunset-watching at the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes

* Studying the ecology of the Great Lakes aboard the tall ship, The Inland Seas
