Essential Job Elements: This employee performs all activities necessary to process payroll and related benefits programs for Interlochen’s 400 non-seasonal and 1000 seasonal employees. Position will enter, update and maintain employee financial information such as hours worked, tax exemptions and direct deposit information and processes checks. Records changes in employee addresses, closes out files when workers resign or retire, works with employees on income tax withholding and other mandatory deductions. Reviews and corrects time and attendance reports; may adjust time records to ensure accuracy in order to complete payroll and issues and records adjustments to worker’s pay because of previous errors or retroactive increases. Administers a variety of voluntary deductions such as internal tuition payments, United Way contributions and 403b opportunities. Processes involuntary deductions (levies and garnishments); and prepares accounting transactions and corresponding documentation. Maintains records regarding the accumulation and use of vacations, holidays, sick days and other miscellaneous leaves of absence. Administers institution pension plan contributions to employee accounts as well as employee contact with these vendors at plan exit. Responds to employee questions and inquiries about tax and financial issues such as overpayments, benefit deductions and direct deposit to ensure employee understanding of and compliance with company policies and practices. Produces standard payroll and benefits reports for management review and/or approval. Provides W-2 payroll information to employees for tax reporting. Calculates payments for group health, life, and disability insurance premiums, and prepares premium reports/payments and communicates with these carriers and vendors. Works with finance department on questions involving maintaining payroll general ledger accounts, remitting taxes, levies and garnishments and bank payroll reconciliation. Prepares federal 941 quarterly tax reports, and voluntary deduction and other benefit plan reports. Maintains all individual and institutional payroll and benefit related files
Qualifications: High level computer skills including word processing and spreadsheet preparation are required. Attention to detail is critical. Must be poised and able to interact and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization, using tactfulness and diplomacy when communicating with other departments and answering employee questions. Strong interpersonal skills will be necessary to handle sensitive and confidential situations that arise because of HIPAA related benefits responsibilities. Ability and willingness to work in a team environment is crucial. Satisfactory completion of background investigation, which may include verification of past employment, education, and felony criminal convictions.
Preferred candidate will have 2-4 years of related payroll and/or benefits experience, knowledge of accounting terminology and generally accepted accounting principles, payroll and tax laws; tax forms processing; and standard office procedures. American Payroll Association Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) requested or ability to quickly acquire same, CPP a plus.
