| Instructor of English and English as a Second Language :: |
Date: Commencing September, 2008
Responsibilities: The instructor will teach five sections of classes, currently divided as three one-hour sections of British Literature and one two-hour section of English as a Second Language (ESL). The college-preparatory English classes are electives for students in grades 11 and 12. The ESL classes can include students in grades 9-11. Interlochen’s class week is Tuesday through Saturday, with Thursday used as a flexible day to offer classes of varying length, individual instruction, and school and department meetings. Academic instructors are also expected to provide a two-hour evening tutorial one evening per week. All faculty are expected to work with the students outside of their teaching responsibilities, compensating for parental absence and assisting the residence hall staff in the development of students' total experience at Interlochen. Faculty are also called upon by graduating seniors to write letters of recommendation for college admissions.
The Interlochen Arts Academy English Department assists students in the exploration of human experience through the pursuit of literary appreciation and language skills. Course content stresses literary analysis, expository writing, vocabulary development, and class discussion; courses also emphasize relationships between literature and the other arts.
The English as a Second Language Department offers a curriculum structured to meet the needs of those international students with limited English proficiency. Courses are designed so that students develop reading, speaking, writing and listening skills that allow them to function successfully in the United States.
Qualifications: Applicants must be qualified to teach high-school English and must already have or be eligible to acquire Michigan teaching certificate. Master’s degree and recent experience are strongly preferred. Experience and training in ESL instruction also strongly preferred. All upper-level literature classes offered by the English Department are academically accelerated and employ methods and materials consistent with and/or beyond traditional AP courses. Background or interest in the arts and experience in integrated or interdisciplinary teaching are valuable in the ideal candidate.
Salary: Competitive compensation and benefits package.
Application: Send letter of introduction (including philosophy of English instruction), resume, transcripts, names of three references with addresses and phone numbers and/or current letters of recommendation, and any other appropriate supportive material to:
