2008 Camp positions
Cabin Counselor Positions Still Available!
Cabin Counselor positions are for roughly 7 weeks 6/15-8/4/08
Institute Cabin Counselor positions are for roughly 2 weeks 6/11-6/20/08


Cabin Counselors, 220 live-in positions: (Base wage $1,100; addl. stipend for Interlochen work experience).  Cabin Counselors should have the following minimum qualifications:  Desire and ability to live in a cabin and work with students in a rustic, camp environment.
 -Ability to assist in or teach a recreation or waterfront class
 -Good character, integrity, adaptability
 -Enthusiasm, energy, patience and self control for a job that can be challenging 
 -Must be 18 and/or have graduated from high school by June 15th.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

General Responsibilities
-Supervise, encourage, problem solve, and instruct in life skills as campers attempt to reach their potential.
-Provide appropriate role modeling for campers. 
-Observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety policies, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
-Communicate with campers at diverse levels of physical, mental, artistic and emotional maturity.
Program Responsibilities
-Guide cabins and individual campers in participating successfully in all areas of Camp life.
-Carry out and enforce Camp regulations and policies.
-Carry out established roles for supervising and reporting camper physical and mental health.
-Instruct campers in emergency procedures.
-Develop age appropriate cabin activities.
-Supervise all aspects of assigned camper time at Camp.
-Teach/assist recreation/waterfront class.
-Share supervision of campers at social events, field trips, artistic presentations, etc.
-Support Divisional/Camp Administrative staff and Camp Mission through word and deed.
Personal Responsibilities
-Actively participate in staff training and meetings.
-Submit all assignments in a timely manner.
-Set a good example for campers and others in the areas that include but are not limited to: cleanliness, punctuality, manners, appropriate language, wearing of Camp uniform.
-Follow Camp restrictions for tobacco, alcohol and drug use.
-Manage personal time in accordance with Camp policy and philosophy.
-Maintain good public relations with parents and other Camp staff.
Secondary Job Responsibilities
Fulfill 8-10 hours of work each week in your secondary job assignment. Job assignments may fall within the following areas:
-Waterfront
-Mailroom
-Print Shop
-Museum
-Admissions
-Security/Transportation
-Administrative
-Food Service

Divisional Comparison Information 

Junior Division
Campers age: 8 - 12
Length of sessions: Three 2 -week sessions
Reveille (wake-up): 7:00am
Taps (lights out): 9:15pm
Campers per cabin: 10 – 14
Counselors per cabin: Interlochen strives to place 2 counselors per cabin in the Junior and Intermediate Divisions whenever possible.  However, staffing is driven by the number of appropriate applicants for each division.
Campers per session (approx. bed space): 68 boys and 120 girls
Additional recreation teaching and divisional responsibilities: Yes
Time off (varies due to scheduling): 1 day off per week, 1 night out per week
Supervision Level: High
Stipend: $1,100

Intermediate Division
Campers age: 11 – 14
Length of Sessions: Two 3 -week sessions
Reveille (wake-up): 6:45am
Taps (lights out): 9:30pm
Campers per cabin: 12 – 16
Counselors per cabin: Interlochen strives to place 2 counselors per cabin in the Junior and Intermediate Divisions whenever possible.  However, staffing is driven by the number of appropriate applicants for each division.
Campers per session (approx. bed space): 148 boys and 300 girls
Additional recreation teaching and divisional responsibilities: Yes
Time off (varies due to scheduling): 1 day off per week, 1 night out per week
Some Intermediate counselors are assigned an additional 8-10 hours per week in secondary job responsibilities outside of their division.

Stipend: $1,100

High School Division
Campers age: 15 – 19
Length of Sessions: 3, 4 or 6 -week sessions
Reveille (wake-up): 6:30am
Taps (lights out): 10:00pm
Campers per cabin: 12 – 18
Counselors per cabin: High School cabins are assigned 1 counselor.
Campers per session (approx. bed space): 314 boys and 505 girls
Additional recreation teaching and divisional responsibilities: Yes
Most High School counselors are assigned an additional 8-10 hours per week in secondary job responsibilities outside of their division.
Time off (varies due to scheduling): 1 day off per week, 1 night out per week
Supervision Level: Moderate
Stipend: $ 1,100

All-State Division*
Campers age: 15 – 18
Length of Sessions: Three 2 -week sessions
Reveille (wake-up): 6:30am
Taps (lights out): 10:00pm
Campers per cabin: 12 – 14
Counselors per cabin: All-State cabins are assigned 1 counselor.
Campers per session (approx. bed space): 72 boys and 140 girls
Additional Recreation Teaching and divisional responsibilities: High
Most All-State counselors are assigned an additional 8-10 hours per week in secondary job responsibilities outside of their division.
Time off (varies due to scheduling): 1 day off per week, 1 night out per week
Supervision Level: High
Stipend: $1,100
* The All State program is made up of students from the state of Michigan.


Divisional Administrative Staff Positions
Unit Leaders (addl. stipend)
Each unit leader is responsible for the cabins and the counselors in that unit, for daily inspections and for various divisional duties. Unit leaders have contact with his/her counselors several times a day, including cabin inspections and head count at night. They serve as a first source of assistance to counselors in any problem situations. Unit leaders also provide cabin coverage for nights out, days off and, in some situations, serve as cabin counselors.

Recreation Director (addl. stipend)
The Recreation Director plans and organizes all recreational activities, co-recreational activities, oversees the running of the recreation hut, coordinates recreational classes, food and special activities. The Recreation Director is the liaison between the division and the Camp Recreation Manager. He/she reports to the Recreation Manager for all recreational/trip related issues. In addition, the Recreation Director may serve as a cabin counselor and share other divisional administrative duties.

Waterfront Director (addl. stipend for each certification)
The Waterfront Director must hold a current American Red Cross certification in Lifeguard Training. S/he is also responsible for overseeing the divisional waterfront. Duties are varied and involve waterfront/boating supervisory and teaching activities for campers 8-18, equipment maintenance, inventory, and distribution, guarding and teaching, as well as supervising several off-campus recreational excursions. The Waterfront Director is the liaison between the division and the Camp Waterfront Manager. The Waterfront Director may serve as a cabin counselor and share other divisional administrative duties. Interlochen does offer a course in Red Cross Lifeguard Training one-week before camp starts (e-mail for information).

Lifeguards (addl. stipend for each certification)
Lifeguards are certified persons that serve as a LT (Lifeguard Training). They guard swimming, canoeing, sailing as well as guarding at off-campus beach trips. Duties are varied and involve waterfront/boating supervision and teaching activities for campers age 8-18, equipment maintenance, inventory, and distribution. Lifeguards are also cabin counselors and have counseling staff responsibilities in the division. Interlochen does offer a course in Red Cross Lifeguard Training one-week before camp starts (e-mail for information).

Required for application: seasonal application, supplemental application for cabin counselor and three Interlochen reference forms.


Institute Cabin Counselors, 18 live-in positions: (base wage $280).  The Institutes are for high school students only with campers ranging in age from 15-19.  Cabin Counselors should have the following minimum qualifications:  Desire and ability to live in a cabin and work with students in a rustic, camp environment.

Staff Hall Counselor, 3 positions: (Base wage $900)
The Staff Hall Counselor is present to maintain the quality of the living environment of Thor Johnson, Picasso, Mozart-Beethoven and Hemingway. The Staff Hall Counselor is expected to live in the dorm and to monitor residents' behavior respective to the standards set by Interlochen.  This is primarily an evening hour position.  Required for application: seasonal application and three Interlochen reference forms.
